Out on the open basalt plains the wind has real bite, and trees that grew up sheltered can suffer once a neighbouring block is cleared for building. Exposed river red gums and old paddock trees are prone to summer limb drop and to being pushed over in a blow, so pruning to reduce weight and thin the canopy makes a genuine difference here. On the heavy clay, ground movement through the dry months can also lift and stress shallow roots.
