Big backyards between two river systems

Much of Canterbury-Bankstown was built with large blocks, and decades on, those backyards now hold some seriously big trees, including mature eucalypts, camphor laurels, jacarandas and old figs growing close to houses, sheds and boundaries. When these trees get too large or start dropping limbs, careful pruning or removal is often needed to keep them safe. The sheer size of many backyard trees is what makes tree work here its own challenge.

The area runs across the low-lying flats of the Cooks River and the Georges River, where softer, wetter ground and open exposure can leave larger trees less stable in strong wind. Western parts of the region also sit on the reactive clays of the Cumberland Plain, which move with the seasons and can push roots toward pipes and foundations. Many established trees are protected, so council approval is often required before major work, particularly for larger removals.
