Cumberland Plain clay and western Sydney heat

Much of Auburn, Greystanes and Merrylands sits on the shrink-swell clays of the Cumberland Plain. These reactive soils move a lot between wet and dry spells, which can lift roots and stress large trees planted close to homes and paths. Remnant Cumberland Plain species such as grey box and forest red gum still appear alongside planted gums in many older gardens.

Summers out this way run hotter and drier than the coast, and heat-stressed trees are far more likely to drop limbs without warning.
